Celebrating Women’s Day ..

Women form an integral part in the building of families, communities & the nation at large. Today we firstly acknowledge & salute the brave Women of 1956, who took to the streets & marched to our Union Buildings in petition against the pass laws which served to maintain population segregation, control urbanization & manage migrant labour during the apartheid era. Whilst South Africa has made significant progress regarding the rights of Women, there are still major issues that severely affect Women in our nation. Jems Foundation notes with concern the gender pay gap in SA which estimates Women to earn 27% less than Men when performing the same functions. Jems Foundation also notes the increase in domestic abuse, rape & violence against Women in our country. We urge Men to respect their wives, daughters & Women in society. We strongly condemn the culture of violence & rape in our communities. We call on Government to take drastic action both legislatively & otherwise to ensure greater awareness when it comes to these pertinent issues. Jems Foundation wishes all Women, A Happy Women’s Day.
